So far, I've read An Inquiry into Love and Death--spooky!! A caveat, however: this has on-page sex. Not extremely explicit, but it's not the vague, wispy Victoria Holt style description. But I've heard her first book, The Haunting of Maddy Clare, is more along the lines of a traditional gothic romance, so if you aren't keen on sex in your fiction, try this one.

Thanks for recommending this author. I saw both these books at Barnes & Noble but decided to look them up for reviews first.
I just finished reading The Haunting of Maddy Clare. It pulled me in from the first page. Great characters. Yes, there are two on page sex scenes and several uses of the F-word by one  character--which in my mind sets it apart from the traditional Gothic Romance authors--but the tone and the historical aspects kept in line with the classics. Worth the read. I found it at my local library.

I absolutely LOVE Simone St. James. I just read her latest, The Broken Girls, and I think it's her best so far.
