A young girl overhears her grandmother talking to her would-be murderer but due to shock over something she overhears, she cannot identify the murderer. When Inspector Septimus Finch becomes involved, he realizes that the girl is in danger. After two more murders, the plot unfolds and the girl begins to remember the conversation.
The story started out a bit confusing but slowly it became a little clearer. Well-paced and it really kept me guessing. This is one of those sentimental Gothics that were popularized in the mid 20th century. I'd give it a B.
