Maiden's Prayer by Joan Fleming
#1
This is technically considered a mystery but I feel it has some merit to be considered a gothic romance.

"She had been guilty of happy foolishness - murder was a heavy price to pay..."

Copyright 1957.

After her mother's death, Ms. Maiden becomes a "free agent".  Having lived in her mother's shadow until middle age, she is extremely unworldly and comes under the spell of a mysterious younger man, who eventually plots to kill her (that is not a spoiler because the reader is practically told this). For those who enjoy more of the mystery and suspense side, this one will satisfy with its twists.
