Study of Jane Eyre
#11
Yes, repression is an essential part, but even more so, exploring the forbidden, being tempted by the dark side.

If you look at the Timothy Dalton version, he is sexually hot. The 2006 BBC version, even more sexually charged.

But she holds back, resists. Morally, of course, but also because she knows she will be TRAPPED if she gives in to him, no matter how much it might seem like liberation.

So dungeons, castles, being locked up, versus freedom, but that freedom comes with responsibility.

Jane could have kept all the money, but she makes her new cousins wealthy. She gives them the freedom to also choose.

And may I remind you, it was EARLY Victorian. She came to the throne in 1837 as a young giddy 18 year old, and was very much in love. People forget that she had 9 children!! from her marriage in 1840, to the time Albert died in 1861.
1 Princess Victoria "Vicky" of Great Britain (Princess Royal) 1840 1901
2 King Edward VII of Great Britain 1841 1910
3 Princess Alice of Great Britain 1843 1878
4 Prince Alfred "Affie" of Great Britain (Duke of Edinburgh and later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) 1844 1900
5 Princess Helena Augusta Victoria "Lenchen" of Great Britain 1846 1923
6 Princess Louise of Great Britain 1848 1939
7 Prince Arthur of Great Britain (1st Duke of Connaught) 1850 1942
8 Prince Leopold of Great Britain (Duke of Albany) 1853 1884
9 Princess Beatrice of Great Britain 1857 1944

So she was not always 'stodgy'!
