It's interesting that she describes Manderley as a blend of Menabilly (her childhood home) and Milton Hall (a large estate in Cambridgeshire), and adds [paraphrasing] that the movie version of Rebecca turned Manderley into "an enormous Gothic mansion" that wasn't at all like Menabilly or "the lovely Milton". Judging from pictures of Menabilly and Milton Hall, it's certain that both are grand, venerable houses. But in terms of atmosphere, do I daresay that Hollywood improved upon Ms. Du Maurier's vision?

The first picture most definitely stirs the imagination in a way that the others do not. Thanks, Paigenumber, from me as well!
