Elements of a great Gothic?

I thought it might be interesting to take a consensus on what readers look for in a great Gothic read. To get the ball rolling, I'll post my own preferences.

I agree with all that you wrote, although I would add that presence of a romance is vital to the story. I emphasize "romance" rather than early consummation of it or lust and/or physical attraction alone. The heroine must be compellingly attracted to the hero for reasons that have integrity.

You did a great job of summarizing the points you made! Thanks for reminding me of the many reasons why I love gothic romances so much!
