Absolutely! You remember your gothic conventions from uni too! Let's be honest people, we all love those elements in the novel because they have those elements to draw the reader in. It is a formula. A writer could not pass a work off as 'gothic' unless it had those elements within it. But let us not forget those other strains of gothic too, the horror gothic (Dracula, Frankenstein) and the urban gothic (Jekyll & Hyde, most of Dickens).
