I can echo what AliceChell wrote. If I had read this summary earlier, I wouldn't have posted some comments in other posts (e.g. house = character), as you put it in far better words than I could ever do.
One thing I might add would be that the gothic isn't primarily focused on action. It's more about conversations. Even silent conversations with herself, I guess. I've never paid much attention to this before, but in the last couple of books I read I noticed the heroine checking off every suspect, contemplating means and motive. I'm not sure that I like that very much, though.
